Insurgents 'using Google Earth' (telegraph)
Insurgents could be using satellite images from a popular website to mount attacks on British and American bases in Iraq, defence experts said last night.

Google Earth allows users to zoom in on almost any location in the world to such close range that cars can be recognised. The site even provides latitude and longitude co-ordinates for buildings.
Bill Sweetman, a technological warfare expert with Jane's, the military and intelligence specialist publisher, said the images could enable terrorists in Iraq to pinpoint targets inside military bases.
"Information gleaned from Google Earth can be of use to these people," he said. "They can use overhead images to get co-ordinates for a mortar attack or for a suicide bomber to try to figure out where a building is in the base so they don't get lost on their way in."
Googleの提供しているソフトGoogle earthがイラクの米英攻撃に利用されているのではないかと言う話題。
Google earthは実際の航空写真を元にして作ったもので、場所によっては非常に鮮明に見ることができる。
これが事実かはわからないが、googleに米英の忠告があるということがおこるかもしれない。

Somewhere beyond the far side of the Sun, a battered Japanese space probe is struggling to make its critical condition clear to controllers back on Earth so they can diagnose the latest problems, develop another set of "work-around" procedures and implement them by remote control. The project’s goal, to return from a years-long interplanetary odyssey with samples from an asteroid, has been teetering on the edge of failure for most of the trip, but the Japanese control team has always been able to work something out before.Even if that goal does slip through the team’s fingers, however, the enormously innovative and resilient mission promises to deliver perhaps an even more important cargo back to Earth: a renewed interest in far-out high-risk imaginative space technology demonstrations.
日本で一時話題になっていた、はやぶさの話。イトカワという小惑星から破片を採取するのが目的。まあ、よくわからないプロジェクトなのだが、MSNのこの記者は"innovative"だと褒めている。日本の宇宙開発って基礎があまりよく出来てない段階でinnovativeなことをしてしまうから、上手く行かないのかなあ。

TOKYO - Until the scandal broke, Hidetsugu Aneha was just an anonymous architect, running a small Tokyo-area company that carried out the mundane but crucial calculations on how much reinforced steel should be used to keep buildings from collapsing in an earthquake. Now he is Japan's most notorious cheat.
The aftershocks to that confession have rumbled across Japan. At least seven hotels have closed. Angry condominium owners have fled their homes, demanding their money back, and construction has paused on other Aneha-related projects. Of the first 14 affected buildings re-examined by engineers, all but one was ordered demolished. The unsettling question now is whether Aneha was a rogue architect who got caught cutting corners or merely the tip of a much deeper problem of a construction industry that systematically cheats on safety.
日本で話題にならない日は無いアネハ問題。海外ではほとんど取り扱われていません。この問題が海外ですごい話題になっていたら実は大変なこととなります。日本の建築物はどこよりも安全と有名なので、外国の建物でも日本の数多くの建設会社が関わっています。もし日本以外でもかなり話題になっていたら、日本に対する信頼がまた一つ失われることになります。ただ今回は１人のrogue（いたずらっ子っていう意味もありますね）が起こした問題にすぎないのだということで落ち着いているようです。
